15 AUGUST 2010, MY FRIEND CATALIN MORARIU
I received today the very bad news that one of the friends that I met in Romania during my world travel, Catalin Morariu, is missing because of a natural disaster in Lardach-Lech (Kashmir). He was on an expedition with three other friends (two boys and a girl, Henriette) from India to Nepal. I was very sad and shocked to find out that Henriette was found dead. Until now nobody could find any trace of Catalin Morariu. The other two friends with were with them in the expedition, Catalin Neascu and Cristian Tzecu have decided to leave India this Sunday.
The mother of Catalin Morariu found a hand-made painting that I left him as a sign of friendship and ask a friend to wrote me (as she doesn’t speak English) in a desperate attempt to find some help somewhere.
If you can help this desperate family find their son, please, act as soon as possible to find him.
Catalin Morariu is known for his record to escaladate the 8.000 meters peak Shishapangma in 2005, during one expedition initiated by the Foundation “For You” from Timisoara. His message of social responsibility towards disabled persons reached several associations in Nepal, in the attempt to create a bridge between incapacitated persons all over the world to help them integrate better in the society.
Hello, I searched for several hours to find some information about what happened there in India. Your comment, Corina, leaves me in big sorrow. They didn’t deserved this. You neither. I knew well Catalin and Henriette and I hoped to find also some good news somewhere. Now I just can be thankful that you the others are ok and that you shared your dreadful adventure with us, to better understand it. And I’m sure you all did everything you could to find them… My condolences to both families. Mihai
your information is not complete,we were 6 in that expedition, Catalin-Henriette along whith other 4 romanian friends. It’s true that Catalin Neacsu si Cristian Tecu was 2 of that romanian but please do not think that they have not tried everything humanly possible to find Catalin. Is very easy for you to say that their decision was to leave India, but the decision did not mean abandoning their friend. On that path, in whitch Catalin and Henriette was lost, we crossed in the next morning after disaster, belive us our priority was to find them. After an hour of walking through mud up to our knees, lot of feer because of the black clouds that were still in the sky we found the lifeless body of one of French children who join us whit a day before. We heard only a few screams of pain from his friends, since then we started realizing, that we had hoped in vain that our friends will be ok.Hope was gone when we reached the village Schiu where there was no trace of our friends .After a night spent in the mountains of fear in the breast because our friends have simply disappeared around us because of the flood that has passed over us,we didn’t want to accept reality and start doing all sorts of scenarios for how could escape.Us the girls, we keep saying that we have a feeling that they are ok..there somewhere. But in the next 10 minutes French friends come back to Catalin N and Cristi with news that a female body found at 100 m from the village, Catalin Neacsu was with the locals to see if he recognize her,it was here, they took her and brought her to the monestery of Schiu.at first he did not want to tell us girls, that the body was of Henriette. Have followed four days of nightmare in which nobody has not got up or has not got down to the village upstream. And it rained almost every night at least as strong as that terrible night. If our departure from those places reduce our friend hopes to be in life then we’ll come back tomorrow. But after you see with your eyes what we saw and lived we must impose ourselves to accept reality otherwise you lose control … we got to live only with: .. but what would have been if…I want everyone to know that Cristian Tecu constantly kept in touch with the Romanian authorities and Denmark and even put pressure on them for finding new information. But the area was severely affected and the search were either slower or were made in vain, that mud came evening after evening and every time brought a new layer of mud I know my words do not help those parents who have lost children and if they think any of us we are somehow to blame then we accept theirs criticisms.I WANT THEME TO KNOW THAT NOTHING DEPENDET ON US…BUT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Only thing that perhaps would help, at least a little, are some photos that we did together whith theme in this expedition. We can only say that we deeply regret loss of our dear friends.
Dear Corina, Thank you for the reply. I am happy you are safe. I am sure nothing depended on you and you made all your possible to help your friends. I am only trying to help the family of my friend. I wish you all the best. Somen, India.
A Romanian alpinist who disappeared in a natural calamity in an expedition in India is still missing after more than one week. The family hopes he might be alive and makes everything possible to find him.
One Romanian alpinist, Catalin Morariu, has disappeared in Lardach-Lech, in the northern part of India (the Kashmir region) for more than a week now. He left Romania on the 3rd of August, together with a group of five persons from Timisoara (a total of three boys and three girls). From the information that the family received, last Thursday, the 5th of August, while they were making an alpinist trip when a terrible storm came, and the strong waters took them along with the pebbles from the mountain. Four of the alpinists (two boys and two girls) survived, although in deep shock. They found the third girl, Henriette, of Danish origin, in a monastery down the mountain and they could identify her by the documents. Catalin Morariu was not found until now, although the authorities in New Delhi are doing their best to find him. Last Monday, on the 9th of August the family of Catalin received a notice that he was found dead, but the next day they received a note that he is only missing. A body was found, but the elements of identification are superficial and the family prays to God that the researches should continue, as they feel he might still be alive. The mother of Catalin Morariu found a hand-made painting that I left to Catalin as a sign of friendship and asked a friend to get in touch with me (as she doesn’t speak English) in a desperate attempt to find some help. Catalin Morariu is known for his record to climb the 8.000 meters peak Shishapangma in 2005, during one expedition initiated by the Foundation “For You” from Timisoara.
