Dear Brothers and Sisters,
My name is Somen Debnath and I’m a cyclist. I am a resident of the village Basanti which is part of West Bengal State in India. My village is part of Sundarbans region which is world famous for its Royal Bengal tiger reserve and largest single block of mangrove forest. My village is 72 KMs away from Kolkata (Calcutta) which is one of largest cities in India, South Asia and Asia too.
I’ve got a degree in Zoology from the University of Calcutta and I have completed ‘Vishaarad’ (Expert) in Fine Arts from the Sarbabhartiya University. At the age of 19 and just two days after acquiring Bachelor degree, I chose a greatest mission of my life which later helped me to laid foundation of a global village too.
An article entitled as “AIDS is Deadlier than Cancer” inspired me at the age of 14 to spread awareness among people. AIDS-related stigma and lack of knowledge about this deadly yet preventable disease motivated me the most. In the beginning, awareness campaign was limited to my village only. It was to get wider by passing days.
Progressively, I started visiting different areas of my state and country on a bicycle and finally it became a global campaign. I’ve set out on world tour since 27th May 2004 with a mission statement – “Around the World Bicycle Tour for HIV/AIDS Awareness Program and Seminars on Indian culture”.
Our planet is too big and there are billions people living on it in different countries. Hence my clear goal is to reach all the 191 countries by the end of year 2020, covering distance of 200.000 KMs approximately. So far I have traveled almost 100 countries including India and crossed 110.000 KMs.
I’ve visited 24 countries in Eastern & Central Asia, 48 countries in Europe and 25 countries in Africa (from Morocco to South Africa). I crossed 7 seas, 3 oceans and greatest mountain rages like Himalaya (South Asia) and Alps (Europe). I’ve visited Greenland and pedaled up to Arctic Circle (North Pole). I saw many faces of mighty Mother Nature.
This longest solo journey on a bicycle isn’t easy at all. During my journey, I faced many unimagined hardships, including torturous 24 day long captivity which Taliban militia put me in because they mistook me as a spy. I got robbed 6 times in Central Asia. I lived with creatures like rhinos, elephants and pythons in wilderness.
My journey till this date was full of learning experiences, thrills, survival challenges and interactions with various ethnicities, cultures & life-styles. I’ve lived with Jarawa people (one of the most ancient tribes) for 20 days in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India. I’ve spend few days with members of Maasai tribe in Kenya.
In the future, I am going to travel through Western Africa, America, Canada, Alaska, Russia, Siberia, Mongolia, China, Japan, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and then back to India. If this journey finishes successfully then it would become a new world record for sure.
Your participation will help me to complete this challenging journey and mission. I will be most honored to associate you as part of my global family! For the global village project, I’ve been collecting chunks of soil from different parts of our planet.
Please donate wholeheartedly and also do join me in AIDS awareness campaign & global village project. If you want more information about my mission and journey in details with photos then please visit my websites.
Presently I am in South Africa. This is the 96th country where I am traveling on bicycle. So far I have pedaled 116,000 KMs from India to South Africa.

“Faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark.”
This is life and we are very fortunate that we live with faith and dream.
I didn’t know anything when i have started this journey. Every single day i am learning with inspirations. It giving me hope and the God always beside of me as a human guiding me, teaching me and giving me strength. I know i can not fly like a bird but i am very fortunate to see the world with a mission. Reach to P…eople with faith and that is enough for me to live with the world.
I will be most honored to associate you as part of my global family!
